Businesses have a hard time choosing surveillance systems that can cater for their needs. One particular challenge is in determining the total record time that an ideal system should achieve. The answer is quite simple - it depends!

Factors that affect the record time in CCTV Systems

Hard Drive Capacity: The amount of storage space available on your hard drive determines the amount of data that can be stored, and in effect, the duration for recording from yoursecurity cameras LI business security cameras. Typically, the size of HDD in DVRs ranges from 500GB to 2TB. Some DVRs support multiple drives to create a stack of up to 12TB, which allows for extended record times.

Record Mode: Modern surveillance systems support a variety of record modes.

  • 24-hour record - In this mode, recording of surveillance video takes place every second; recording never stops. The size of the video on your hard drive increases rapidly, leading to less record time.
  • Alarm & Motion detection - Instead of recording non-stop, modern CCTV Systems have a record mode, whereby recording is triggered by certain events such as motion. When there is no activity within the business premises, there is no recording and thus, more record time.

Frame Rate: Business security cameras support record and playback at different frame rates. The most common settings include 15, 24, and 30 frames per second (fps). 15 fps is useful for non-critical surveillance, whereas 24 fps is the average setting. On the other hand, 30 fps is for real-time video. Higher frame rates lead to less record time.

Record Size: This refers to the size of the frame when recording video. The standard size is usually 352 x 240 resolution, also referred to as CIF. An increase in the frame size leads to less record time.

Record Quality: High quality recording is not always necessary, especially in CCTV surveillance applications where image detail is not important. In such cases, the settings for image quality can be adjusted downwards to increase the record time.
