When installing CCTV surveillance cameras, many businesses face the dilemma of selecting an appropriate location to store their video. Usually, they have to choose between on-site and off-site (remote) storage. On-site storage requires the business to physically host the video recording system i.e. DVR or NVR, as well as hard drives, at the same location as the cameras. On the other hand, remote storage allows for storage in "the cloud," or on servers that are hosted off-site.

The Benefits of an Off-site Storage System

Businesses may prefer on-site storage for a variety of reasons including the simplifiedsurveillance cameras nyc design, easy implementation, and relatively lower cost. However, remote/off-site storage solutions address some of the challenges that on-site storage poses, namely, security of CCTV equipment, centralization, and cost of maintenance.

1.    Security

On-site storage systems have one major shortcoming, namely, they are vulnerable to physical abuse, from either employees or burglars. Businesses have to come up with ways of restricting physical access, such as locking the CCTV recording system in a strong room. However, such techniques can only keep out vandals and burglars, but cannot protect the system from more advanced threats such as fire, flooding, and other natural disasters. Storing surveillance video in remote locations ensures that the data is safe from any kind of threat within the business premises.

2.    Centralized Storage

Businesses with IP surveillance cameras in multiple facilities can benefit from remote storage solutions, since they don't have to maintain separate recording systems at each facility. All the IP Cameras in the different facilities, regardless of their geographic locations, can be configured to transmit video images through the IP network to a centralized remote surveillance center for storage.

3.    Low Maintenance Costs

Implementing a remote backup solution lowers the cost of maintenance for CCTV equipment. For instance, you don't have to worry about spending money for routine maintenance or upgrades for DVR or storage servers. Additionally, you don't have to hire personnel to maintain your equipment. The remote-hosting or cloud-hosting service provider is responsible for all technical aspects regarding the remote storage center.
