One of the important considerations when deploying home or business surveillance systems is the choice of video storage system. Users have to choose between central video storage and Edge recording, depending on the kind of surveillance application that they are looking to deploy.

How to find edge recording IP camera

Edge recording is not an entirely new concept. Various surveillance camera models from as far back as a decade ago came with SD card slots to allow for onboard storage. However, edge recording technological challenges, limited storage capacity and high costs made the concept untenable for most home and business surveillance applications. Over the years, the technology behind onboard storage media such as flash technology has matured and led to a significant price reduction in SD cards and other removable storage media, as well as an increase in the storage capacity.

Common Applications For Edge Recording

  • Failover Recording: Onboard storage is an ideal solution for preventing loss of video when the connection between the cameras and video recording servers goes down. It can also be used as a backup solution for the video recording system in case of a malfunction or when the server is down for maintenance. When the connection to cameras is re-established, the cameras sync the stored video with the central server.
  • Mobile Surveillance Applications: Deploying security cameras on moving vehicles poses a challenge because it is not always possible to establish a link to the central video recording server. As such, edge recording comes in handy as the video can be stored onboard the cameras until the vehicles return to base.
  •  Business Surveillance With Low Bandwidth: Edge recording IP camera systems eliminate high bandwidth usage on business networks because there is no continuous streaming of video to the recording servers. As such, network bandwidth will only be utilized when synching the cameras with the servers and when users need to access live camera feeds.
  • Complex Surveillance Applications: Edge recording gives businesses the flexibility to design complex surveillance applications. For instance, businesses can deploy security cameras at remote locations, where it would normally be a bit expensive to roll out surveillance network infrastructure.
