Every video surveillance application is unique owing to the varying preferences and needs of users. As such, users have to first conduct a security audit to enable them to identify what they need to achieve from their residential or commercial surveillance applications. Doing this will ensure that them to select, not only the right security camera company, but also the right security cameras to fit their purpose.
Factors affecting your choice of security cameras
Indoor/outdoor requirements: Most of the common IP Cameras can be used for indoor surveillance applications. However, the same cannot be said for outdoor applications. For a camera to be installed outdoors, it has to be weatherized in order to withstand extreme heat, humidity levels, rain, and freezing temperatures. In addition, it has to be protected against dust, dirt, hail, and other unfavorable elements.
Desired angle: Every security camera has a set "angle of view" depending on its lenses, positioning, and the installation location. Generally, lenses that can view far away locations have a narrow angle of view, and vice versa.
Distance from the target: Security cameras come with different types of lenses, which determine the distance of objects that they can effectively focus on. Some cameras come with fixed lenses, which enable them to only focus on objects that are within the set distances, as determined by the lens' focal length. On the other hand, IP Cameras can come fitted with zoom lenses, which allow users to adjust the focal lengths in order to focus on objects at different distances.
Lighting: The lighting environment is an important factor when choosing security cameras because cameras require light, visible or infrared, in order to capture images. It is very easy to deploy cameras in well-lit environments since the constant lighting allows most of the common IP Cameras to function. However, users have to be more careful when choosing cameras for poorly-lit environments, as well as locations where the lighting conditions fluctuate all the time. Such environments require special cameras such as IR cameras and Day/Night cameras.
