Home and business owners have two options, regarding video storage solutions, when deploying security camera systems. These are centralized video management systems (VMS) and Edge recording.

What is Edge Recording?

Recording at the Edge is a video storage concept whereby cameras record video onto onboard SD cards or other network-attached storage devices. This is unlike the conventional storageedge recording concept that involves sending the recorded video from security cameras to centralized video recorders such as DVRs and NVRs.

What is the edge recording cost?

Cost is an important consideration when deploying any kind of surveillance application. For this reason, many property owners tend to compare the costs of having a centralized VMS vs. Edge recording cost to determine its suitability for their applications. For many years, recording at the Edge faced various limitations such as limited storage capacity for SD cards and less durability. However, recent technological advancements have changed all this.

The SD-card storage capacity has increased significantly and can easily match that of hard disk drives. On the other hand, SD cards are now much more durable and are able to guarantee the integrity of stored data for extended periods. In comparison, Edge recording solutions have come of age and can easily compete with the variety of centralized VMS, with regard to cost, performance and reliability.

Cost-Effective applications for Edge Recording

  • Remote Surveillance Applications: Deploying VMS for security cameras based in remote locations can prove challenging and costly, owing to the complex network designs and bandwidth requirements. As such, it is much easier and affordable to design and deploy Edge recording solutions for cameras in remote sites. In addition, users have more flexibility with their network designs, regardless of the number of remote sites.
  • Redundancy: Recording at the edge can provide a reliable and low-cost backup solution for centralized VMS. It provides failover recording for sensitive security camera applications that cannot afford to lose video data in the event of network outage. If the security cameras fail to establish a connection with the central storage server, the recorded video will automatically be sent to secondary storage (onboard SD card) until the connection resumes.
