Home and business owners choose to buy and install the wide variety of DIY security camera kits that are available in the market, instead of hiring a professional IP security camera installation company. These kits seem like a low cost option that could enable the users toip security cameras protect their property and valuables, and save money. It is true that these kits are cheap, but is it worth taking the risk? Security camera systems are designed to safeguard both property and lives. However, failing to get the job done properly, by a professional, is simply gambling with your safety, as well as the lives of everyone living or working within your premises.

Planning for IP Security Camera Installation

1. Existing Network Infrastructure

IP security cameras can run on regular computer networks. As such, you could easily integrate your cameras into your existing home or business network - you don't have to run new cabling. However, the security camera company should first conduct an audit to determine if your surveillance camera system will work effectively, without interfering with your other operations that rely on the same network infrastructure.

2. Power Supply

IP Cameras have a distinct advantage over analog cameras in that they do not require an additional power supply. IP Cameras rely on Power over Ethernet (PoE) to operate. Therefore, you just need to plug your camera into the nearest hub. An additional power supply could however, be used for backup purposes.

3. Video Storage

Professional IP grade surveillance cameras have two storage options, namely, centralized storage and Edge storage.

  • Centralized storage: This type of storage requires you to setup a video storage system, consisting of network video recorder (NVR) and hard drives. All security cameras in the system send recorded video footage to the NVR, which then stores the video on to network drives or other attached storage.
  • Storage over the Edge: Some IP Cameras come with the option of storing video directly onto SD cards that are fitted on the cameras. Even though this technology is relatively new, its future prospects are very promising owing to the steady improvement in SD card storage capacity and related technologies.
