Edge recording is a concept that enables surveillance cameras to record video directly to onboard SD-Cards or to Network Attached Storage devices. This is different from the conventional video management systems, which require the recorded video to be sent to a centralized storage systems such as network servers, PCs, NVRs or DVRs.

The Benefits of Edge Recording

Recording on the edge offers three main benefits, namely:

  • It provides flexibility when designing video surveillance applications. edge recording
  • It makes it possible to deploy affordable and reliable video recording solutions, especially in remote locations.
  • It reduces the strain on network bandwidth that might be caused by constant transmission of video data to the VMS.

What applications are ideal for Edge Recording?

1.    Remote sites with a handful of cameras

Deploying centralized storage solutions is a bit costly, especially when there are remote cameras involved. If you have just a few surveillance cameras in your remote sites, it would not make much financial sense to deploy several video recorders. Instead, you could use onboard storage for each of the cameras.

2.    Backup storage for sensitive surveillance applications

Network outages can have dire consequences on centralized video storage systems. If your surveillance cameras are unable to establish a connection to the NVR, then any video that is recorded during that period will be lost. Using edge recording, the cameras can keep recording even when the network goes offline or the cameras lose their connection to the video management system. When the network connection is restored, the cameras can send the onboard video to the VMS, and then resumes normal recording.

3.    Mobile camera applications

Surveillance applications that involve the use of mobile cameras pose unique challenges in as far as storage is concerned. It can be quite difficult to connect mobile cameras to a centralized storage system owing to infrastructure restrictions. As such, recording on the edge offers a quick solution. The video is recorded to onboard storage while on the move. On your return to the facility, you can synch each camera with the main video recording system to transfer the recorded video.
